The sgraffito project was the most challenging and detail oriented project assigned all year. I started out this project with a test tile. I made the test tile out of B-Clay. This clay turns a pure white after it is fires. I then traced our tiles with a picture of our choice. Then I shaved away the black where the white should be. For our main project, I started out with a piece of B-Clay. I made it into a ball, then put it on the table to turn it into a slab. I had to make sure that the slab was large enough to fit around the plate sized mold of my choice. After I sized the slab, I used a rib to make sure it was smooth and free of any little air pockets. I then put the slab onto the mold and cut the access clay off. I let it dry to the point that I could take it off without ruining the shape. Then, I traced my selected picture and outlined it on the clay. Then, I painted the plate black and let it dry. After the pain was dry, I carved out where the while should be with a scraper tool. Once it was fired, I put clear glaze on it and it was fired again.
My InspirationI chose to do the Chicago white sox because I am a fan of the team. I didn't pick them to do originally. I originally picked Marilyn Monroe as my picture, but after making a very unsuccessful tile, I knew I had to make the switch.
